Kassidy Cook qualified for her first Olympic Games in the women's individual 3m springboard by finishing first at the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials on Sunday in Indianapolis. Abby Johnston, who earned a silver medal in synchronized springboard at the 2012 Olympics, qualified an individual Rio berth by finishing second to Cook at Trials.
Lauren Reedy, Laura Ryan and 14-year-old Maria Coburn rounded out the top five at Trials.
The Trials competition concludes at 8 p.m. ET with the men's 10m platform final, where the top two finishers will qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. David Boudia, the reigning Olympic champion, has a 40-point lead over the field after the cumulative preliminary and semifinal rounds.
Cook watched the 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony from her hospital bed – she injured her shoulder following the 2012 Trials and underwent surgery to repair her bionic shoulder, as she now calls it. She was a dive ahead of the field after completing her round 4 dive, a reverse two and a half worth 67.50 points. She finished out the competition with a forward two and a half with one and a half twists for a final score of 1003.65.
Johnston, the 2012 Olympic synchronized springboard silver medalist, needed only 2.5s to clinch her spot in Rio on her fifth and final dive, a forward two and a half with one and a half twists. She scored 70.50 points for a 949.30 point total.
There was a bit of a question regarding how many women's springboard spots the U.S. earned for Rio. On Friday, the international governing body of diving upped the U.S.' quota spots from one to two, allowing for one more woman to qualify for the Games.
